History

Old Town is where settlement and development in Scottsdale began. In 1888, Winfield Scott purchased 640 acres of Old Town Scottsdale. He planted two olive trees on the second street, still standing today. Named after these historic trees, Los Olivos Mexican Patio has its Mexican Patio restaurant. J.L. was the first business to open in Old Town. J.L. Davis’ General Store opened in Old Town in 1897. Sarah Thomas bought the store in 1904. It was the first woman-owned business in the town. Built-in Old Town in 1909, the “Little Red Schoolhouse”, which cost $4,500, has served 6 purposes, including as a library and chamber for commerce. It is now the Scottsdale Historical Museum’s home. Scottsdale was founded as a city in 1951. The population was just over 2,000 at that time. Old Town Scottsdale’s oldest attraction, the Sugar Bowl opened in 1958 on Christmas Eve. Bil Keane, the author of “Family Circus”, featured the restaurant several times in the comic strip.
